The Computer Science Lab School of Oscar Smith Middle - Chesapeake

ODU Center for Education Opportunity and innovation

The Computer Science Lab School (CSLS) at Oscar Smith Middle (OSM) is dedicated to seamlessly integrating computer science into the curriculum through a human-centered design thinking framework. This collaborative initiative between Chesapeake City Public Schools (CPS) and Old Dominion University (ODU) emphasizes the importance of early academic preparation for underrepresented students in the technology talent pipeline. We do this by:

Transformative Opportunities and Experiences
+
Innovative Focus on Computer Science
+
Cultivate Curiosity and Cultural Awareness
+
Empowering Students in their Academic Journey

Our vision is to empower middle school students with a program that prepares them for high school and the technology talent pipeline. CSLS envisions students contributing to computer science with technical skills and design thinking.

Designing a New Pipeline

The journey of the Center began with ODU’s recognition of the critical need for a supportive network that brings together educators, students, and stakeholders. Our engagement with the International Association of Laboratory Schools and visits to Lab Schools across North America provided the foundation for what would become a dynamic and influential center. The formation of the Center for Education Innovation and Opportunity was driven by the power of partnerships, connecting Lab Schools across Virginia with the resources and expertise they need to flourish.
